Lesson Overview
This lesson allows students to zoom out and see how the food system is linked to a global issue: climate change. You will learn about how climate change occurs, analyze the connections between climate change and agriculture, and consider ways to reduce the food system’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Warm-up Activity: Explain what the differences betweenthese two statements.
1.What is similar about the measurements? What is different? 2.How often does weather change? Does the climate change like weather does? Post your responses in the Public comment section on your Google Classroom account. |
◼ The temperature in New York City averaged 82 degrees Fahrenheit on July 20, 2010.1
◼ The temperature in New York City averaged 77 degrees Fahrenheit for the month of July between 1981 and 2010.2 |
Level 7 Guided Question: What is the relationship between climate change and the food system?
Level 7 Investigation: Greenhouse Lab
Complete the lab below and record the the data and answer the analysis section and take picture of your results and data analysis and submit into your Google Classroom account.
Level 7 Videos: Greenhouse Effect & Climate Change
Choose a VDO that will help understand how to answer the lab analysis questions as well as Sources of Greenhouse Gases Handout (see below). In addition, read the "Our Changing Climate" Google Presentation to help you with your Handout. Be sure you can answer the following: What does this information tell you about agriculture’s role in climate change? (might be on the test) |
Level 7 Elaborate: Greenhouses Explained
To complete this form you will need to watch one of the VDO (i.e. Climate Chang VDO). Submit the completed form to your Google Classroom account.
To complete this form you will need to read the Google slide presentation (see above). Submit the completed form to your Google Classroom account.

Level 7 Review Making a Greenhouse Mobile
Using your imagination, data and knowledge that you have gained while studying greenhouse gases you & a partner will construct a mobile using the important GHGs (GreenHouse Gases) that are produced within our food systems. In addition, you will include the Food system source, it's rank and don't forget to use text and pictures to tell your story about how the food systems impact Climate Change.
